About Unfortified
Unfortified helps you find out whether UK packaged foods have added folic acid, based on what their ingredient lists say. It's about choice and labelling: we don't make any claims about health.
Why now
Under the Bread and Flour (Amendment) Regulations 2024, from 13 December 2026 folic acid must be added to non-wholemeal common wheat flour at 0.25mg per 100g. It joins the existing mandatory additions: calcium carbonate, iron, niacin and thiamin.
Wholemeal flour, flour from small mills, and flour for certain products (such as communion wafers and matzos) are exempt. Flours that aren't from common wheat, like rice, oat, spelt or gluten-free flours, aren't covered. Some fortified products have been on shelves since autumn 2025, and older packs with older labels will still be around after the deadline.
Many breakfast cereals and some other foods already add folic acid voluntarily, so we cover all added folic acid, not just flour.
Where the data comes from
Product information comes from Open Food Facts, a free database built by volunteers. We refresh it every night. If a product is missing or its ingredients are wrong, you can fix it on Open Food Facts and the change will show up here after the next refresh.
Pregnancy
Taking a folic acid supplement before and during pregnancy remains standard NHS advice.
